Nestled in the calm embrace of Labuan Island, Malaysia, The Labuan War Cemetery, also known as the World War II Memorial, is a treasured tribute to the sacrifice of nearly 3,900 World War II warriors. This is the final resting place for troops from Australia, Britain, India and New Zealand. With its pristinely kept grounds, the cemetery serves as a poignant reminder of the immensely challenging years of World War II.

The British North Borneo Chartered Company controlled North Borneo from 1880 until its seizure by the Japanese in 1942, after which, it became a British Crown Colony in 1946. During World War II, North Borneo surrendered to the Japanese in December 1941 following a brief but hard battle in which the 2/15th Punjab Regiment and other allied forces managed to block Japanese advances while damaging critical oil infrastructure.

Following the seizure of the area, Prisoners of War (PoW) were subjected to tremendous hardship, culminating in the infamous ‘Death March to Ranau’, during which many perished in famine, fatigue or execution. Australian forces recaptured Borneo in 1945 and the remains of the fallen, including those from the Sandakan and Kuching camps, were finally moved to the Labuan War Cemetery. At present, the cemetery has 3,922 burials, many of which are unidentified due to the Japanese commandant’s destruction of documents before the arrival of Allied forces.
