Bako National Park

Established in 1957, Bako National Park is Sarawak's oldest, also the smallest national park, covering just 27 square kilometres. Despite its size, it has a wide range of habitats, including mangrove swamps, dipterocarp forests, peat swamps and coastal cliffs, acting as a microcosm of Borneo's natural legacy. The park is known for its peculiar proboscis monkeys, which are unique to Borneo. It also has long-tailed macaques, bearded pigs, silvered langurs and over 190 bird species here.

Also, there are 16 colour-coded trekking and hiking routes that cater to various skill levels. Notable routes include the scenic Telok Pandan Kecil Trail for its breathtaking coastline views and the circular Lintang Trail, which showcases the full range of Bako's unique biodiversity.


To get to Bako National Park 

  • To reach Bako National Park from Kuching, take a bus or taxi to Bako Jetty Terminal, followed by a 20-minute boat ride to the park.
  • Public buses from Kuching to Bako Jetty terminal take about 45-60 minutes (red public bus number 1) and cost RM 3.50 per person.
  • A minivan offers a quicker, more comfortable alternative.

Santubong National Park

Santubong National Park is steeped in history and folklore. Famous for its towering Mount Santubong, which stands at 810 metres above sea level. This beautiful refuge provides hard walks with spectacular peak views and rich jungles. Featuring a variety of wildlife species with stunning waterfalls, bird aficionados can also catch a glimpse of the majestic Rhinoceros Hornbill, particularly along the Summit Trail's F7 section. The park's distinct combination of rainforest and seaside experiences makes it a noteworthy attraction.


To get to Santubong Park 

  • By car: Just 35 kilometres from Kuching, Santubong Park is easily accessible by car bound for Damai Beach. Parking is available along the roadside, near a narrow, unassuming entrance that invites you to explore further.

Mulu National Park

Mulu National Park was founded in 1974, then declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000. The park covers 52,864 hectares, encompassing three spectacular mountains: Mount Mulu, Mount Benarat and Mount Api. Mount Mulu, Sarawak's second-highest peak at 2,376 metres, dominates the park while being known for its spectacular limestone formations, some of which date back over 1.5 million years.

The park is also home to world-renowned cave systems, including the Sarawak Chamber-the biggest natural subterranean chamber, Deer Cave-the longest cave corridor, plus Clearwater Cave-Southeast Asia's longest cave system. The magnificent karst scenery, particularly at the pinnacles of Gunung Api, is extremely stunning. Mulu's biodiversity is just as amazing with over 2,000 plant species, including rare orchids plus carnivorous pitcher plants, alongside a diverse range of fauna such as bats, birds, insects and reptiles. Climb Mount Mulu and the Mount Api Pinnacle, explore the breathtaking caverns, take a boat trip down the Melinau River or hike through beautiful woods-there is truly something for every adventurer here.

Entrance Fees 

All travellers who visit the National Park have to purchase a 5-day Pass. This allows for an unlimited number of entries within the period. Tickets are not transferable. Also, the price excludes a guide for climbing Mount Mulu Summit or the Mount Api Pinnacle.

Malaysians: 

  • Adults: RM 15
  • Senior Citizens or Persons with Disability: RM 7
  • Children (6 to 18 years old): RM 5
  • Free entrance for children ages 5 and below.

Non-Malaysian Citizens: 

  • Adults or Senior Citizens: RM 30
  • Persons with Disability: RM 15
  • Children (6 to 18 years old): RM 10
  • Free entrance for children ages 5 and below.

To get to Mulu National Park 

Mulu is most easily accessed by air, with regular flights operated by MASwings, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines. The flight takes approximately 30 minutes from Miri, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu to Mulu Airport. It is a two-minute drive from the Mulu Airport, which is easily accessible via e-hailing services like Grab or Airasia.

In addition, Mulu's local community provides dependable and inexpensive airport shuttles to hotels and lodges across the national park for a fee of RM 5 per person. If you opt for it, you may walk from the airport to your lodging or the national park, which would take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Matang Wildlife Centre

Matang Wildlife Centre was founded in 1998. It is committed to treating and protecting Borneo's injured, orphaned and illegally traded wildlife. The facility, located within Kubah National Park, covers 180 hectares of lowland forest which serves as a natural home for endangered species such as orangutans, sun bears and hornbills. Its well-kept enclosures closely mimic natural surroundings, providing a safe home for animals while educating visitors with interactive displays and guided tours. The centre also features some jungle experiences, which include four jungle trails specifically the Sungai Rayu Trail, Sungai Senduk Trail, Pitcher Trail and Sungai Buluh Trail, allowing for bird-watching with further exploration of the park's beautiful waterfalls of animal life. The remaining two trails are Pitcher Trail and Sungai Buluh Trail, which are temporarily closed. The centre started operating from 8 AM to 5 PM daily, including Public Holidays.

  • Located about 40 minutes from Kuching and is accessible by taxi or private transport

Sarawak Delta Geopark

The Sarawak Delta Geopark spans 311,246 hectares (3,112 sq. km.) and is home to several geo-sites, bio-sites plus cultural sites including the Wind Cave, Fairy Cave and Tasik Biru. This vast geopark, which encompasses the Bau, Padawan and Kuching districts, provides tourists with a unique opportunity to see various natural marvels and historical relics in one of Sarawak's most important ecological and cultural regions.

Delve into the Wind Cave, which is rich with notable natural and historical features. The Wind Cave is located 45 kilometres from Kuching in Bau and is known for its cool air, spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, alongside its archaeological value with ancient objects discovered within its chambers. The cave's well-kept boardwalk also provides an immersive study of its unique geology plus rich wildlife, which includes swiftlets plus bats.

Moving on to the Fairy Cave, which is located around 50 kilometres from Kuching. The cave captivates tourists with its fairy-tale ambience, beautiful limestone formations and a vertical shaft that allows sunlight into the cave. Historically utilised as a refuge plus a place of prayer, it features relics of antique altars alongside beautiful views from its entrance.

Last but not least, Tasik Biru, located in Bau and approximately 35 kilometres from Kuching, is a stunning blue lake created by a flooded gold mine. The lake is known for its vibrant hue due to mineral deposits and offers magnificent views plus leisure activities such as boat rides plus pedal boats. It represents the region's extensive gold mining history dating back to the nineteenth century, making it both stunningly scenic plus historically significant.

To get to Sarawak Delta Geopark 

  • By car: Drive from Kuching to Bau town, about 50 kilometres away, whilst taking in the scenic beauty of Sarawak’s lush countryside. The route offers views of rolling hills and tropical rainforests. Follow the clear signboards to the Sarawak Delta Geopark.
  • By taxi: Take a local bus from Kuching to Bau town and then a taxi to the reserve. Enjoy the picturesque landscapes of serene rivers and verdant hills as you approach the caves.
