Located at Church Street in George Town, Penang, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion is a museum that showcases the Peranakan’s unique cultural heritage. It was built at the end of the 19th century by Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Kwee, a business mogul who rose to fame through the mining industry, and it was once his residence and office.
A prominent community in Penang, the Peranakans (Babas and Nyonyas) are said to be the fusion between Chinese culture and certain local Malay customs, resulting in rich traditions, cuisines, and language of the Peranakans (Baba Malay or Peranakan Malay), as well as a rich legacy of antiques.
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is recreated to offer a glimpse of the Babas and Nyonyas’ opulent lifestyle and their customs and traditions. The museum displays thousands of Peranakan antiques and collectibles, as well as interior design.
The mansion showcases different sections, portraying their own distinctive qualities. The first dining room is fully decorated with wide tables, elaborate golden woodwork, and a display of Chinese plates and cups, while the second one displays European furniture and unique floor tiles.
The Bridal Chamber offers a glimpse of the newlyweds’ room in the past, which showcases the detailed artwork of the Peranakan. The Nyonya Kitchen showcases Peranakan’s cooking utensils, including rare metal utensils, thermos, jugs and wooden shutters. A small café is also located here for visitors to enjoy a cup of coffee and try the local dishes. Other sections of the mansions include the Family Hall, Treasure Hall and a grand living room.
The exterior and the compound of the mansion is adorned with gigantic Chinese figure paintings, a big altar for an ancestral temple, and a water fountain.

Entrance fee is RM20 for adults while children under the age of six can get into the museum for free. Visitors are advised to make prior arrangements for conducted tours and viewing of the mansion.
